How often should I have my chimney cleaned?
The National Fire Protection Association Standard 211 states that chimneys, fireplaces, and vents must be inspected at least once annually for structural integrity, freedom from deposits, and proper clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs should be performed as needed. This national safety standard accounts for the fact that even with minimal use, animals can build nests in the flue or deterioration may occur that makes the chimney unsafe. The Chimney Safety Institute of America advises that open masonry fireplaces should be cleaned annually, or sooner if glaze is present in the system. Factory-built fireplaces should be cleaned when significant buildup occurs, which is defined as enough fuel buildup to cause a chimney fire that could damage the chimney or spread to your home.My fireplace stinks, especially in the summer. What can I do?
This unpleasant odor comes from creosote deposits in the chimney, a natural byproduct of burning wood. The smell typically worsens during summer months when humidity is high and air conditioning is running. While a thorough cleaning will help, it usually won't completely eliminate the problem. There are several household remedies you can try, including placing a small bowl of red, white, or brown cooking vinegar, or used coffee grounds inside the firebox. The underlying issue is air being drawn down the chimney, which indicates overall pressure problems within the house. Introducing make-up air elsewhere in the home can help. A top sealing damper will also reduce the air flow coming down the chimney. We encourage you to discuss these solutions with your technician during your service appointment. Why use Town & Country Chimney Service, Inc.?
